Happy Birthday, Elizabeth Edwards
Happy Birthday, Elizabeth Edwards! The former attorney and wife of John Edwards — a one-term Senator from North Carolina and former candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination — turns 60 today. Her husband was notably John Kerry’s nominee for Vice President in 2004, and on the day Kerry conceded defeat in the U.S. Presidential Election, Elizabeth Edwards was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then she has fought her cancer courageously and every birthday has truly been a victory song.
Though her stage 4 breast cancer has metastasized to her bones and other organs, she is committed to living fully and celebrating life. In her recent book, “Resilience: Reflections on the Burdens and Gifts of Facing Life’s Adversities,” Elizabeth Edwards says she hopes that her children “will be able to say that she stood in the storm, and when the wind did not go her way — and surely it has not — she adjusted her sails.” Here’s what she recently told TV journalist Matt Lauer:
“I’m actually doing all right. Cancer is not a straight line. It’s up and down.”
[Edwards] said she’ll deal with the side effects of the disease and the drugs she takes to attempt to control it. In any event, dealing with pain is better than the alternative, Edwards said with a gentle smile…
John and Elizabeth Edwards have three children, Cate, 27, Emma Claire, 11, and Jack, who is almost 9. Another son, Wade, died in a car crash in 1996 at the age of 16.
Edwards said she wrote [her] book for her children and for others dealing with similar trials.
“I hope I have important things to say,” she told Lauer. “Everybody goes through exactly the same thing, and [I want] to say you can get through these things too, you’re going to have a tomorrow …”
So Happy Birthday to Elizabeth Edwards! May she live to see many more birthdays, and may her strength and perseverance be an inspiration to us all. To find out how you can help create a world with less cancer and more birthdays, visit morebirthdays.com.

This weekend, my 12-year old daughter and her friends are hosting a surprise birthday sleepover for one of their friends whose mother lost her very short battle with lung cancer this past July. Each year, her Mom would have a huge sleepover birthday party for her which all the girls looked forward to. This will be the first birthday she will have without her Mom and it will probably be difficult for her and her Dad and brothers.
