The late Michael Jackson’s birthday is coming up, and director Spike Lee is organizing a block party-style celebration in Brooklyn to celebrate. Starpulse reports:

The filmmaker’s bash in Kings County for the late King of Pop will be on August 29, when Jackson would have turned 51. DJ Spinna will be spinning all things Michael Jackson.

Lee, a Brooklyn native, and Jackson collaborated on the music video for “They Don’t Care About Us.” Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will proclaim August 29 “Michael Jackson Day” at the celebration.

Happy Birthday Robert Redford

Posted by Birthday Cate on August 18, 2009 in General

I’m a big hollywood buff, and Robert Redford is one of the greats. This two-time Academy Award winner has been making hits since the 1960s, with titles such as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969), “The Sting” (1973) and “All the President’s Men” (1976). After his big-time acting roles, he went on to a successful directing career. But what I admire him most for is starting one of the most widely respected film festivals in the country if not the world, The Sundance Film Festival and Sundance Institute. Happy birthday Robert Redford, here’s to many more!

Tip Tuesday: 1st Birthday Party Supplies

Posted by Birthday Cate on August 18, 2009 in Tip Tuesday

Everyone knows the party basics: Cake, balloons, streamers etc. But it’s a little bit different on your child’s first birthday, and you’ll need to come prepared. Here’s a list I found on Lifetips.com that I think should make that first birthday extra special.

  • 1st birthday supplies like large, colorful plastic balls and plastic containers to practice fine motor skills will keep infants as well as toddlers entertained.
  • A fabric tunnel and tent to crawl through, walk through, or run through will keep toddlers and younger children busy.
  • Large, fat, washable crayons and a large roll of white paper for doodling will give a creative outlet for all your younger guests.

Birthday Traditions from Ghana

Posted by Birthday Cate on August 17, 2009 in General

There are tons of different birthday traditions — whether it’s from family to family or country to country. Today I wanted to let you know of an interesting birthday tradition from the African country of Ghana, courtesy of theholidayspot.com

Children wake up to a special treat of “oto” – a patty prepared from a mashed sweet potato and eggs fried in palm oil.

Asante people in Ghana celebrate “krada” on their birthday. The first thing they do when they wake up is to cleanse themselves using a special leaf soaked overnight in water. It is more of a ritual intended to purify the inner soul. Later in the day they enjoy a feast with friends and family.

Fun Fact Friday: Who Owns "Happy Birthday"?

Posted by Birthday Cate on August 14, 2009 in Fun Fact Friday

Even though practically everyone sings this song at birthday parties — or at embarrassingly high volumes in restaurants — most people don’t know the interesting history of the happy birthday song. Here’s a few factoids courtesy of HappyBirthday.com

  • The melody for the famous song was first penned by two sisters, Mildred and Patty Hill
  • The song was originally called Good Morning to All and was used to greet schoolchildren in the morning.
  • Another Hill sister (Jessica) published and copyrighted the song in 1935.
  • ‘Happy Birthday’ became the first song to be performed in outer space when it was performed by the astronauts on Apollo IX in 1969.
  • Time Warner reportedly paid $25 million for the rights to the song in 1988.
  • The copyright is currently owned by TimeWarner and licensed and enforced by ASCAP
  • In its long history, only two lawsuits have been brought for illegal singing of the song.
  • Annual royalties of the song are estimated at around $2 million.
  • The copyright will not expire until at least 2030
  • There is much debate and controversy about the validity of this copyright for such a simple and old song.
  • This copyright is the main reason you never hear waiters singing the song to patrons in restaurants. They usually sing some alternate, corporate-approved birthday song.

City Celebrates 175th Birthday with World's Largest Toga Party!

Posted by Birthday Cate on August 14, 2009 in General

Rome, Georgia is celebrating their 175th birthday, and one of the festivities is an attempt at the world’s largest toga party. What a cool idea! Here’s what the Rome News Tribune wrote about it:

Guinness officials have approved the attempt and will be present, Ann Arnold, director of the Downtown Development Authority, told city and county staff, elected officials and others at a press conference Monday at City Hall. Several people were dressed in togas and tunics for the occasion.

The record Rome is trying to break is 2,166 toga wearers and was set by Cottage Grove, Ore., in 2003.

Happy Birthday, Alfred Hitchcock

Posted by Birthday Cate on August 13, 2009 in General

Happy birthday to the late legendary director Alfred Hitchcock. In order to celebrate his 109th birthday, I’d like to take a moment to remember his brilliant work. Best known for his ability to make film-goers scream, he created masterpieces such as Psycho, which is still the reason people peek outside a shower curtain when they hear a noise coming from the doorway, and The Birds, a classic thriller which gave birds a killer stereotype. Brandy Sims of the Memphis Movie Examiner has a great summary of Hitchcock’s work here. Heres wishing Alfred Hitchcock a happy 109th birthday and to celebrating his works for many years to come.

Theme Thursday: Birthday Boot Camp

Posted by Birthday Cate on August 13, 2009 in Theme Thursday

I was surprised when I first came across this — I never imagined that the words “birthday” and “boot camp” would ever go together, but this is kind of a cool idea. A company in Maryland offers a boot-camp-style party theme that keeps kids active and having fun. Gazette.net wrote this about it:

[The program] gets kids of all ages moving and sweating through a range of physical activities from jumping jacks and push-ups to tug-of-war, potato sack races and obstacle courses. “When it comes to a birthday party, it’s still like something organized but still fun, and it gets your kids moving,” [Katie Howard, the owner] said.

She will also tailor the activities in “boot camp” depending on gender and age groups. Boys might prefer “Capture the Flag” while girls could be better suited for aerobics. One activity involves children trying to locate items in different food groups and placing them in the right lunch bags.

Even though the “birthday boot camp” is in Maryland, parents everywhere can use some of these ideas to create a healthy birthday party for their kids. Plus, we can all see the benefit in a party that gets the kids tired-out by the time they leave.
