And we’ve come a long way. Today, on our 97th, we celebrate each and every one of you – our dedicated supporters – who help us save lives from cancer each and every day.

From marching in our Women’s Field Army to walking in Relay, throughout the decades you have been by our side, making our collective dream a reality.

97 years may seem like a long time, but it’s just the beginning – we’ve just gotten started. We won’t stop until we’ve reached our goal, eradicating this terrible disease once and for all.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the more birthdays crew stopped by the American Cancer Society headquarters to celebrate our big day. Check out our video below to catch up on all the action.

All you have to do to enter the giveaway is post a comment at the bottom of this post by May 26 with your idea for the perfect healthy parfait. Will you add fruit, yogurt, or something more inventive? Give it a shot, and you could win the tools to make your culinary creation in style.

To get your creative juices flowing, here are some healthy ideas from the American Cancer Society’s resident expert – Director of Nutrition and Physical Activity, Colleen Doyle. And remember, you can still use these tips and recipes to make something healthy and delicious, even if you don’t win our giveaway.

  • Start with a base of yogurt, but skip the pre-sweetened stuff. Use mashed up fruit (like berries or bananas) mixed with unsweetened, plain yogurt to sweeten (and of course, add whole fruit to it!)
  • Layer in fruit: Add fresh berries and/or other sliced fruits such as bananas and peaches. Using several different kinds of fruits can make it more interesting, but avoid using frozen or canned fruits which can make your parfait too mushy.
  • Add some crunch: Ideas include granola (compare labels to select one with the least amount of sugar and fat and only use a few tablespoons), crushed up vanilla wafers or graham crackers, toasted nuts (toasting nuts gives them more flavor so you can use less since they’re high in calories).
  • Think outside the box: Chunks of angel food cake or low fat pound cake are fun options.

The Rules:

  • Leave a comment below with your ideas for making a healthy parfait. Entries can be submitted until May 25 at midnight EST.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified.
  • The giveaway is open to any US residents, 18 or older, void where prohibited. The giveaway is not open to American Cancer Society employees or family members who share a residence. Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone).
  • The winner will be chosen randomly. The winner will receive one set of four Pink and White Dots Glasses, 1 Sweet Honey Vanilla Sprinkle, 2 Help Whip Cancer Reusable Shopping Bags, 1 Pink Color-Coated Tomato Knife, and 1 Twixit! Clip Combo Pack that includes 2 giant, 4 large, and 4 small clips. Approximate value is $76.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within 3 days of the end of the giveaway. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.

Power the Flower: American Cancer Society and Ellen Pompeo Tell Women to Choose You!

Posted by Katie on May 05, 2010 in Birthday Cate

Yesterday, the American Cancer Society launched Choose You, a new program created to inspire women to make their health a top priority to stay well and help prevent cancer. The Choose You program is just one more way ACS is helping create a world with less cancer and more birthdays and we couldn’t be more proud to share it with you!

And what an amazing 2 days it’s been since the program launched in New York City! Between hanging out with Matt and Meredith on The Today Show to Ellen Pompeo inspiring comments on Good Morning America, The View, and Jimmy Fallon, Choose You has made quite a splash!

It all began bright and early yesterday morning when the American Cancer Society descended upon The Today Show to tell Matt, Meredith, Al, and Ann all about our new program. But it wasn’t just us – we had many supporters on the plaza rocking our blue Choose You shirts! Thanks to everyone for coming out!

Then it was off to Good Morning America where Ellen Pompeo continued to inform viewers about the importance of making their health a priority! As we know, 1 in 3 women will get cancer in their lifetime, but 50% of all cancer deaths are preventable if we did what we know works – maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise, quit/avoid smoking, and get our recommended cancer screenings. By taking control of our health today, we’ll help celebrate more birthdays with our loved ones!

But the day wasn’t over quite yet – there was still a launch event in Times Square! ACS executives were joined onstage by national sponsors, Walgreens and Sprite Zero, to help kick off the program, with help from Ellen Pompeo of course! Ellen gave an inspiring speech, reminding us all that no matter how busy life gets, your health comes first!

And then it was time for the moment we’d all been waiting for … to officially launch our new program, Ellen powered the Choose You flower via the world’s largest digital sign – the Walgreens Times Square billboard! I’ve never seen anything so big!

We even had some of our dedicated Bloggers for More Birthdays on hand to capture all the action! Thanks Amie and Julie!

But before we all could say goodbye to NYC, we had one final event – a “Blue Carpet” luncheon for 100 VIP guests, kicking off Choose You in style :)

But the Choose You program – and these amazing launch events – wouldn’t have been possible without the support of so many! Thanks to Walgreens, Sprite Zero, Ellen Pompeo, and all of you for everything you did to make the Choose You launch such a success! Visit ChooseYou.com today to make your commitment to living healthy and let’s all create a world with more birthdays.

You can help prevent cancer and create a world with more birthdays — and it’s as simple as choosing you! Put your health first and make your Choose You Commitment today!

Tip Tuesday: Throw Your Puppy a Party!

Posted by Katie on April 27, 2010 in General

puppyFor those of us who own a dog, we know just how special our little one is. After all, we call them man’s best friend for a reason, right? So don’t they deserve a celebration on their special day too?

I’ve never thrown a birthday party for a pet before, so I went to Suite101.com to learn the tricks of the trade for throwing a special event for your favorite puppy :)

Plan the Event:

If your dog has other doggie friends, then this is a great time to invite the whole gang. Consider where you might have the party first. If you are inviting other dogs, then an outside location is probably best. Go to your local park, or set up a party area in your backyard. This will help cut down on the mess that could happen inside your home. After you have secured a firm date and location, it is time to send off the invitations.

Invitation Ideas:

There are many ways you can invite your dog’s friends to the birthday party. You can get crafty and cut bone shapes out of cardstock paper or you can attach an invitation to a new doggie toy. You might also want to think about having your party to benefit dogs that are not so fortunate. Perhaps you could mention on your invitation to bring donations of dog food, toys or other items in lieu of gifts. These in turn could be donated to your local pet shelter or rescue organization.

Dog Activities:

With a bunch of dogs at your doggie party, you need to plan some activities. Of course, you won’t want to play ring around the rosy or pin the tail on the donkey. Instead, think from your pooch’s perspective. How about a couple of wading pools full of water (make sure you have some dry towels on hand) or set up a dog obstacle course for the pups to play around. Some dogs will be happy just to hang out with the others, but some may need a few fun activities. If you are still thinking about helping other less-fortunate dogs, then how about hosting a dog wash at your party? You could ask for donations. Not only will it help others, it will leave everyone smelling fresh and clean.

Treats and Goodies:

No birthday party would be complete without a few treats and goodies. Make sure you have plenty of treats and fresh water on hand for your barking guests, as well as your human guests. You can buy gourmet dog treats at your local pet store, and maybe you could even bag them up and let the dogs take them home for party favors, too.

And our little pups aren’t only man’s best friend — they can also help us create a world with more birthdays! Check out the American Cancer Society’s Bark for Life to learn more!

Happy Birthday Elle Macpherson!

elle_macpherson_modelcoAustralian supermodel Elle Macpherson is celebrating a birthday today!

Elle is considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, but she’s also quite the businesswoman! Elle is the founder of “The Body,” a line of very popular skin care products, as well as the founder of her own lingerie line.

Still want to know more about this beauty? I went to IMDb.com to see if I could pick up some little known facts. Check ’em out!

    • One of the models who own the Fashion Cafe in New York City, along with Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell.
    • She was “discovered” at the age of eighteen while vacationing in Aspen, Colorado, and was promptly signed to the Click modeling agency.

    • One of People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” in 1995.
    • One of the world’s top fashion models.
    • As a teenager, she ran a mile in 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

The More Birthdays Crew Presents at the Washington Health and Fitness Expo!

Posted by Katie on February 13, 2010 in General

Did you know the Washington Health and Fitness Expo is the nation’s largest public health fair? In fact, the event attracts more than 85,000 attendees to the Washington Convention Center in our nation’s capital each year, and I had the opportunity to join in the festivities a few weeks ago!

The More Birthdays crew spent a weekend presenting at the expo from our birthday-themed booth. We spoke to hundreds of attendees about the movement for less cancer and more birthdays and signed up more than 550 new members!

Owly Images

We definitely brought the party (and raised awareness too). We passed out hundreds of our signature red birthday hats, bumper stickers, and More Birthdays T-shirts. Our very own Alex Mudry was a huge hit as she baked the American Cancer Society’s official birthday cake on the healthy cooking stage in front of some very hungry spectators.

We even caught the attention of Top Chef finalist Carla Hall who dropped by to get her picture taken and join the movement.

For those of you who didn’t get a chance to stop by, check out our video below!

Kay is also a gifted speaker and has been a featured at the International Union Against Cancer conference and the Relay for Life® Youth Conference in Orlando. Click here to learn more about this incredible woman!
