Posted by Katie on June 11, 2010 in General

Today this talented young actor rings in his 23rd birthday. Shia first entered into the show business industry by doing standup comedy routines. However, after seeing a friend on the TV show, “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” Shia decided that acting was his true calling.

He had his first real breakthrough when he was cast as the troublesome young brother, Louis, on the Disney Channel series “Even Stevens”. From then on, Shia’s career hasn’t stopped skyrocketing.

He has appeared in numerous Hollywood hits such as Transformers, Disturbia, I, Robot and Holes and has worked alongside actors such as Megan Fox, Harrison Ford and Michael Douglas.

The very busy Shia will be starring in the upcoming film “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” which is slated to be released on September 24th and is currently working on “Transformers 3” and “The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman”. We hope that he can find the time to celebrate his birthday today!

Birthday Wishes to Music Superstar Mary J. Blige

Posted by Katie on January 11, 2010 in General

mary-j-bligeHappy birthday to this 9-time Grammy winner!

For those of you who don’t know, Ms. Mary J. Blige is one of America’s favorite singers. In fact, she’s sold over 48 million records since her debut in the early 1990s and has even collaborated with legends like U2, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, and Andrea Bocelli!

To learn a little bit more about the early years of “The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul,” we turned to Rolling Stone.

Blige was born in the Bronx but spent her early years in Savannah, Georgia, where she sang in a Pentecostal church. Her family moved to suburban Yonkers, New York, where Blige continued to sing. Her first demo (recorded at a karaoke studio in a shopping mall) was a version of Anita Baker’s “Caught Up in the Rapture,” which eventually got her signed by Andre Harrell to Uptown Records.

Blige’s debut, What’s the 411? (Number Six Pop, Number One R&B, 1992), mixed her affinity for classic soul (she covered Chaka Khan’s “Sweet Thing”) with a contemporary urban edge. The album includes cameos by rappers Grand Puba, Heavy D., C.L. Smooth, De La Soul’s Mase, and EPMD’s Erick Sermon. Blige first charted with “You Remind Me” (Number 29 Pop, Number One R&B, 1992), from the film Strictly Business, but it was her debut album’s single “Real Love” (Number Seven Pop, Number 1 R&B, 1992) made Blige one of the biggest crossover artists of the year. In 1993 a remix album of 411 was released and the “Sweet Thing” single peaked at Number 28 on the Pop charts.

Happy Birthday to Musician Dave Matthews!

Posted by Katie on January 09, 2010 in General

DaveMatthewsHappy Birthday, Dave! The South African-American Grammy winner turns the big 4-3 today!

Dave is the lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist for the Dave Matthews Band, a band that has been popular since the early 90’s! And we have all seen enough one-hit wonders to know it’s hard to stay on the top of the charts for that long!

So how did Dave hit it big? Biography.com has more!

In 1990, Matthews decided to put together a demo tape and approached his favorite jazz musicians to accompany him: sax player Leroi Moore and drummer Carter Beauford. For bass, he signed on Stefan Lessard, a 16-year-old local prodigy. Violinist Boyd Tinsley was recruited just weeks after the band formed. Early local gigs were an immediate success, and the band quickly developed a devoted following. The band’s manager, Coran Capshaw, utilized grassroots marketing to move the band to the national stage.

The Dave Matthews Band was soon playing at frat houses and beach clubs around the country. People began to make bootlegs of their shows and word of the band spread quickly among the college crowd. In 1994, the band released its major label debut, Under The Table And Dreaming, which went to No. 11 in the Billboard 200. The band’s second album, Crash, was released two years later, debuting at No. 2. Though the album didn’t receive as much critical praise, the band’s follow-up concert sold out New York’s Madison Square Garden in three hours.

Happy Birthday to Hollywood Royalty!

Posted by Katie on December 19, 2009 in General

jake_gyllenhaal-12231Yesterday, I wished one handsome actor a happy birthday (Mr. Brad Pitt) and today I get to do the same!

Today is Jake Gyllenhaal’s 29th birthday!

The son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner, Jake was destined to star in movies!

And Jake isn’t the only Gyllenhaal lighting up the big screen. Jake’s sister Maggie is also a talented actress featured in films such as World Trade Center, Donnie Darko and The Dark Knight.

Want to know more about Jake (who doesn’t)? Visit IMDb for more.

Jake made his film debut at age eleven in City Slickers (1991) playing Billy Crystal’s son and began to establish himself as an up-and-coming actor in films like as October Sky (1999) before being cast in the title role in Donnie Darko (2001), for which he was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for best actor. Gyllenhaal’s performance as a troubled psychotic won him excellent reviews, and the film quickly received cult status. He played opposite Jennifer Aniston in another Sundance favorite in The Good Girl (2002) and once again earned good reviews. Gyllenhaal also starred in the Walt Disney romantic comedy, Bubble Boy (2001) and in the science fiction blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow (2004) which also starred Dennis Quaid.

Making his theater debut, Gyllenhaal appeared on the London stage with a starring role in Kenneth Lonergan’s revival of “This Is Our Youth”. The play, which had been a critical sensation on Broadway, ran for eight weeks in London’s West End. Gyllenhaal’s performance in Jarhead (2005) with Jamie Foxx came as a surprise to critics and fans, alike. Gyllenhaal played a markedly hostile, masculinely violent Marine during Gulf War I, while balancing this with the sensitive, vulnerable qualities of the lead character. Brokeback Mountain (2005), in which he co-starred with Australian actor Heath Ledger as sheep herders who fall in love in the 1960s and depicts their relationship over the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. The film went on to win four Golden Globes, four BAFTA Awards and was nominated for a leading eight Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Gyllenhaal was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Brokeback Mountain (2005). Jake is also the godfather of Matilda Rose Ledger, daughter of actor Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams.

Happy Birthday Bob Barker!

Posted by Katie on December 12, 2009 in General

bobbarkerFormer game show host Bob Barker turns 86 today. Bob is best known for his 35-year run as the host of The Price is Right, one of the highest rated and longest running TV game shows in history.

Let’s be honest, who hasn’t dreamed of hearing those magic words — “Come on down, you’re the next contestant on The Price is Right!?”

IMDb provides an overview of Mr. Barker’s career and his life before The Price is Right.

Barker was born in Darrington, WA, and spent most of his youth on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota where his mother was a schoolteacher. His family eventually moved to Springfield, Missouri, where he attended high school and Drury College on a basketball scholarship. When World War II interrupted his studies, he became a Navy fighter pilot, but the war ended before he was assigned to a seagoing squadron.

Following his discharge, Barker returned to Drury and took a job at a local radio station to help finance his studies. It was there that he discovered what he did best was to host audience participation shows. After graduating summa cum laude with a degree in economics, he went to work for a radio station in Palm Beach, Florida. A year later, he moved to Los Angeles, and within a week, he was the host of his own radio program, The Bob Barker Show. He made his debut in 1956 on national television as the host of the popular “Truth or Consequences” (1950). ‘Ralph Edwards”, the show’s originator, had sold the show to NBC as a daytime strip, but he had not chosen a host. He auditioned other hosts in Hollywood and New York for weeks, but when he heard The Bob Barker Show on his car radio, he knew he had found the man for the job. And proving that Edwards had chosen him wisely, Barker had hosted Truth or Consequences for an unbelievable 18 years, and he and Edwards remain close friends today.

Happy birthday, Bob. And for old time sake — Help control the pet population. Have your pet spayed or neutered! :)
