Fun Fact Friday: Birthday Presents

Posted on  Posted by Katie on June 11, 2010 in General

Giving someone a gift on their special day is an important part of birthday celebrations. But when did this thoughtful tradition start? And more importantly, why?

Out of curiosity, the Official Birthday Blog did a little research and we found this on Articlesbase.com:
When early civilizations began to have more accurate ways of measuring time, they began marking special events like produce harvesting or in this case, birthdays. However, in the days before Christianity, it was believed that evil spirits descended upon people celebrating their birthdays thus making it necessary for the birthday celebrator to be surrounded by merriment to drive away the nasty spirits. During these times, birthday gifts were not yet common and what people often gave were well wishes for the celebrator. Nonetheless, if a guest brought a token, or what we have now come to know as a birthday gift during the festivities, it was considered a good omen for the birthday celebrator.

Of course, in modern times we’re much less concerned about the threat of evil spirits and instead we give presents as symbols of love and generosity. However, people in early civilizations did have one thing right: a birthday present doesn’t have to be big or expensive; often, the littlest tokens of kindness can carry the greatest meaning to the recipient.

If you’re looking for a truly heartfelt birthday present, why not make a donation to the American Cancer Society or to a charity that the birthday boy or girl holds dear? You can make a donation to the American Cancer Society on their behalf or even make a custom birthday page in honor of the birthday boy or girl here: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/Events/Birthday-NHO?pg=tgreeting&fr_id=19690

Happy Birthday Elizabeth Hurley!

Posted on  Posted by Katie on June 10, 2010 in General

Today I want to wish a very happy 45th birthday to English model and actress Elizabeth Hurley. Hurley’s first film appearance was in 1987’s Aria and has appeared in numerous films ranging from Passenger 57 and Bedazzled to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.

Her film credits include cameo appearances in numerous shows as well as hosting the first season of Project: Catwalk, a British version of the popular American show Project Runway.

Hurley began modeling in 1995 for Estée Lauder and has worked on numerous product lines ranging from clothing to cosmetics ever since. Currently, Hurley owns a swimsuit line.

Perhaps best known as Hugh Grant’s former girlfriend, Hurley has been married to her current husband, Arun Nayar, for three years.

Happy birthday Elizabeth, here’s to many more birthdays!

Congratulations to the U.S. Olympic Bobsled Team!

ACS_banner4It was an exciting 2 weeks for Americans as the U.S. Olympic Team brought home a record-setting 37 medals from the 2010 Winter Games!

But all of us here at the Official Birthday Blog are particularly impressed with the success of the bobsled team — the newest members of the movement for more birthdays!

The men’s 4-man sled captured gold this weekend — the 1st gold medal for the U.S in the event since 1948!

And while the men celebrate their gold, the women’s 2-man sled also had reason to celebrate! Americans Erin Pac and Elana Meyers captured the bronze medal with an amazing 4-run time of 3 minutes 33.13 seconds!

For those of you that don’t know, a few weeks ago the more birthdays crew traveled to Utah Olympic Park to spend some quality time with the team as they went through their final practice runs before Vancouver! Check out the video below to learn more about what these spectacular athletes are doing to create a world with more birthdays!

So on behalf of all of us, congratulations Team USA! We can’t wait until 2014 :)

Happy 6th Birthday Facebook!

Posted on  Posted by Katie on February 04, 2010 in General

facebook_logoCan you believe that Facebook is only 6 years old today! It’s hard to remember how we communicated without it!

Yes, Facebook has become a global phenomenon. During its brief 4 years, it has quickly evolved from a social networking site for a few university students to a network of over 350 million dedicated users!

We’ve all lost touch with more friends than we’d like to admit, but Facebook has made it easy for us to rekindle old relationships and keep track of friends and family members — no matter where they are!

But Facebook isn’t just about connecting with friends both past and present. It also gives each and every one of us another avenue to support the causes that are near and dear to our hearts — like the movement for more birthdays!

So who is responsible for this internet revolution? That would be 25-year old Harvard dropout, Mark Zuckerberg.

To learn more about Mark and his online phenomenon, check out his interview with 60 Minutes. And if you haven’t visited it yet, check out our More Birthdays Facebook page!
