,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,knight7Dr. O’Malley — I’m sorry, I mean — T.R. Knight is celebrating a birthday today!

T.R. became a household name in 2005 when he was cast as the lovable Dr. George O’Malley in ABC’s hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy! He even earned an Emmy nomination in 2007 for his work!

While T.R. is no longer on the show, he is a now a fixture on Broadway! But how did he make it to Hollywood fame? To learn more, I went to TV.com!

American actor T.R. Knight, known to television fans as Dr. George O’Malley of Grey’s Anatomy, grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota and started out as a theater actor in his hometown. He was part of the acting company at the Guthrie Theater since he was a child. After graduating from the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, T.R. briefly attended the University of Minnesota before dropping out and continuing with acting on stage.

In the Guthrie, Knight played Richard Miller in Eugene O’Neill’s Ah, Wilderness! and the title character in Amadeus by Peter Shaffer. On Broadway, he portrayed Damis in Tartuffe alongside Brian Bedford and acted as Tim Allgood in Michael Frayn’s Noises Off opposite Patti LuPone, Peter Gallagher, and Richard Easton. Other theatrical credits include Joe in Conor McPherson’s This Lime Tree Bower and Brendan Hilliard in Anto Howard’s Scattergood, for which he earned a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play.

Before winning the role of the endearing intern George on the hit ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy in 2005, Emmy-nominated Knight was a series regular opposite Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf on Charlie Lawrence. He has also made guest appearances in TV shows such as Frasier, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and CSI.

Happy Birthday BET!

bet-logo1_31011BET, or Black Entertainment Television, is celebrating its 30th birthday today!

The popular cable TV network is a leading programmer of entertainment, music, news and public affairs for the African-American audience. Primarily focused on music videos and urban-oriented movies and TV series, BET reaches more than 98 million households and can be seen in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom and sub-Saharan Africa!

Another cool fact about BET — its co-founder, Sheila Johnson, is the 1st Black female billionaire!

To learn a little bit more about the TV network, I turned to the Museum of Broadcast Communications.

Black Entertainment Television (BET) is the first and only television network in the United States primarily devoted to the attraction of African American viewers. Launched with a paltry $15,000 investment in 1980, the black-owned, basic-cable franchise had grown into a diversified, $61 million media enterprise by late 1993. Despite this rather phenomenal growth, however, BET’s audience reach continues to be overshadowed by larger cable industry players (e.g., Turner Broadcasting Systems [TBS], Home Box Office [HBO], and ESPN).

Based in majority-black Washington, D.C., BET has added about 2 million subscriber homes per year since 1984, reaching more than 40 million cable households in 2500 markets by 1995. Moreover, the network has more than tripled revenues since 1985; it reported profits for the first time in 1986, when it finally hit A.C. Nielsen ratings charts and attracted major advertisers. In 1991, BET Holdings, Inc.–BET’s parent company–became the first black-owned company to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

300px-JulieChen042808Wish TV personality Julie Chen a happy birthday — the CBS news anchor turns 40 today!

Julie has more than 14 years of newscasting experience, but the television beauty is best known for co-anchoring The Early Show on CBS and hosting the hit reality program, Big Brother.

For more information on Julie’s professional success, check out her bio at CBSnews.com! A brief blurb is below.

She has covered several major news stories, including the war in Iraq, and in March 2003 she reported for the program from Kuwait and Qatar during the war.

Chen has interviewed newsmakers, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Queen Rania of Jordan, and former Defense Secretary William Cohen, as well as celebrities Tom Hanks, Ellen DeGeneres, Tom Cruise, Ben Affleck, Angelina Jolie, Chris Rock and Jennifer Lopez, among many others.

Before that, Chen served as news anchor of The Early Show and anchor of the CBS Morning News, the CBS Television Network’s early-morning broadcast, since Nov. 1, 1999, when The Early Show debuted under that title.

I should also mention that Julie is not only a busy journalist and producer, but she’s also a new mom! Julie and husband Leslie Moonves (president and CEO of CBS Television) had their first child, Charlie, in September.

Congrats, Julie and happy birthday!
